Paul and I are reaching down from Herring Bay aboard Petrel bound for Chesapeake Seaside Md. a neighborhood that lines a sandy strip of waterfront on the Western Shore just below Holland Level. At the rear of us the whitecaps are scribbling haiku stanzas across the drinking water and gulls skim the waves like so several scholars attempting to decipher the phrases. The late winter sky is flat and blue. The air is cold. I had promised Paul a short sail and he’s grumbling about the definition of the phrase “quick.”
“It is more of a concept than an precise measurement ” I say. He continues to be unconvinced that winter sailing is really worth the hard work.
Now we can see a couple of substantial-rise buildings-the Chesapeake Beach Resort & Spa to the south a pink beach condominium to the north-and among them a row of waterfront homes strung like beads. Farther up the shoreline we can just make out the fishing pier and 50 percent-mile-lengthy boardwalk at North Beach. The two cities which operate together are like the Minneapolis-St. Paul of the Bay-one particular boasts a large hotel and charter-fishing fleet and (more…)
