The earliest recognized residents of what is now Miami were the “Tequesta” Indians. Small is identified of the Tequesta Indians other than they resided along the banks of the Miami River above twelve hundred many years in the past. Think it or not there was a little organic rapid a few miles upriver from where it emptied into Biscayne Bay. The Tequesta Indians hunted and fished along the banks of the River. In the 16th and once again in the 18th century the Spanish established a couple of little missions along the banks of the Miami River. Spain initially possessed the region now known as “Florida” but ceded Florida and of program Miami to the British in later years. The first American Settlers started arriving in Miami Florida someday in the early to mid 19th century and settled in and about the River. Agriculture in addition to fishing was 1 of the handful of financial mainstays of the area. The River’s h2o source was the Everglades and it was believed that the wetland could be drained by eliminating the rapids. Thus supplying further cultivatable land for the new arrivals to settle and create as farms. I am really sure (more…)
