The status of Fort Myers Beach as a sleepy seashore neighborhood belies its authentic roots as home to Indians and a quantity of adventurers. Some of its tumultuous history contains the unlikely mixture of pirates homesteaders and mosquitoes. Today Estero Island and its sister island San Carlos make up the neighborhood of Fort Myers Beach.
Estero Island was when the middle of the Caloosa Indian heartland. This geologically young barrier island was formed properly following the Earth’s previous ice age. Prior to the arrival of the white gentleman the Caloosa Indians used several of the Florida West Coast islands as their hunting and fishing grounds. “Shell Mounds ” or the remains of their meals and community particles mark Estero Island and other important landmarks close to Fort Myers Seashore.
Historians concur that Juan Ponce de Leon and his men had been the very first to see Florida and gave the lush state its identify in the early 1500s. They were followed by a amount of other European explorers looking for their fortune. The Caloosas bitterly resisted these arrivals.
